Originally built as the Loew's Penn Theatre in 1927, Heinz Hall is a 2,676-seat concert hall and performing arts centre at 600 Penn Avenue in the Cultural District of Pittsburgh. Designed by the prolific theatre architects Rapp and Rapp, the opulent movie palace featured a marble staircase, a 50-foot vaulted Venetian ceiling, and one-ton crystal chandeliers. When declining attendance forced the theatre to close in 1964, the building was slated for demolition to make way for a parking lot. John Heinz II and the Pittsburgh Symphony Society intervened, undertaking a three-year, 10-million-dollar reconstruction that converted the movie palace into a modern concert hall. Ornamental elements were replaced with acoustical baffles, the stage was extended by nearly 30 feet to add dressing rooms and a music library, and the polychrome decor was reimagined in white and gold with 24-carat gold leaf accents. Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts reopened with a grand ceremony on September 10, 1971. Further renovations in 1982 added the Heinz Hall Plaza, a 1995 project installed a new orchestra shell, and a 2015 update refreshed patron amenities. The hall presents approximately 200 performances each year and serves as the permanent home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, the Pittsburgh Broadway Series, and the Pittsburgh Speakers Series. More than half a million patrons attend events annually. The auditorium features an orchestra section, a mezzanine, a balcony, and box seating arranged beneath the Venetian-style vaulted ceiling. The rebuilt one-ton crystal chandeliers remain a centrepiece of the interior. Heinz Hall sits at the heart of the Pittsburgh Cultural District, within walking distance of the Benedum Center, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, and numerous galleries and restaurants along Penn Avenue.
