Landmark Theatre

Originally opened as Loew's State Theater on February 18, 1928, the Landmark Theatre at 362 South Salina Street in Syracuse, New York, is a Thomas W. Lamb-designed movie palace and the city's only surviving example of the opulent theatrical venues of the 1920s. Marcus Loew commissioned the 3.4-million-dollar construction to be the largest and grandest of downtown Syracuse's five movie palaces, and it became an instant centrepiece of the city's arts and culture community. By the 1970s, suburbanisation and television had made the business unviable. Loew's announced closure, prompting the Committee to Save Loew's to rally the community. The committee raised 35,000 dollars, matched by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and in 1977 the nonprofit Syracuse Area Landmark Theatre (SALT) purchased the building. The theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic Places the same year. A 16-million-dollar stagehouse expansion in 2010 enabled the Landmark to host the largest touring Broadway productions including Hamilton, Wicked, and The Lion King. In 2021, a 2.4-million-dollar renovation replaced the original 1928 seats for the first time, reducing capacity from approximately 2,900 to 2,754 while adding comfort and legroom. The theatre continues to present concerts, Broadway touring shows, comedy, and community events. During the Great Depression and World War II, the theatre continued to do brisk business as patrons escaped into its plush grandeur. The ornate interior featured elaborate ceiling mouldings, a grand chandelier, and one of the most richly decorated auditoriums of its era. The building was saved from demolition when the community rallied to preserve it. Today the theatre is managed by SALT, which has focused restoration on historic preservation, meeting critical infrastructure needs, and improving accessibility and the patron experience.
