Legacy Arena at The BJCC

Following a $125 million modernization completed in November 2021, Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex re-emerged as one of the Southeast's premier indoor entertainment venues. The 18-month renovation added a 66,000-square-foot expansion and overhauled roughly 300,000 square feet of existing space, installing 15,000 new seats, a center-hung HD videoboard with an active lower ring, a 360-degree LED ribbon board spanning 767 feet, and completely new lighting and sound systems. The arena originally opened on September 26, 1976 as the BJCC Coliseum, with John Denver performing the inaugural concert on November 19 of that year. Over the following decades it became a fixture of Birmingham's cultural life, hosting performances by Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Prince, Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, and Bob Dylan, along with the Ringling Bros. circus, Monster Jam, Harlem Globetrotters appearances, and two Davis Cup tennis tournaments. The facility was renamed the BJCC Arena in 1999 and became Legacy Arena in January 2015 under a naming-rights deal with Legacy Credit Union. Current capacity stands at 17,654 for sporting events, up to 16,250 for concerts, and 6,000 in a cut-down theatre configuration. The arena is home to the Birmingham Squadron, the NBA G League affiliate of the New Orleans Pelicans, who relocated to the venue for the 2021-22 season. Premium amenities added in the renovation include 12 suites, two club levels, the Priority Club social space, three nursing mothers' rooms, a Kulture City sensory room, and expanded concessions with 48 service windows. A new glass-walled southwest entry plaza replaced the original concrete facade, dramatically opening the building to the surrounding streetscape. The arena connects to the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel via a 150-foot skywalk installed in an earlier improvement cycle. Located at 1898 9th Avenue North in the heart of Birmingham's civic campus, Legacy Arena sits adjacent to the BJCC exhibition halls and Protective Stadium, anchoring a district that continues to drive significant economic activity for the city.
