Lehigh Country Club

Designed by master golf architect William Flynn and opened for play on Memorial Day 1928, Lehigh Country Club occupies roughly 205 acres along the Little Lehigh Creek in the rolling hills of the Lehigh Valley near Allentown, Pennsylvania. Flynn, whose portfolio includes Shinnecock Hills and The Country Club at Brookline, crafted a routing that exploits 105 feet of elevation change across a parkland setting framed by specimen trees and intersected by the stream. The club's origins trace to the early 1900s, when a golf course near 17th and Walnut Streets was informally known as the Allentown Golf Club. Incorporation under the Lehigh Country Club name came on December 12, 1910, and a nine-hole course with an Italian-villa-style clubhouse opened in Rittersville in 1912. Founding members included prominent Lehigh Valley industrialists General Harry Trexler and Charles Schwab. By the mid-1920s, competition from nearby Northampton and Saucon Valley pushed the membership to acquire two farms for an 18-hole facility. Toomey and Flynn completed construction of the new course by December 1926 at a contract price of $109,120, with all work done by hand labor, horse-drawn scoops, and a single tractor. Heavy rains and even a sinkhole that swallowed a third of the 10th green delayed conditioning through 1927. The current clubhouse was completed in late 1928. The course plays to a par 70 with three tee sets ranging from 4,400 to 6,600 yards. Flynn's green complexes here are considered among his best, with all but three greens designed to reward a ground-game approach. The four par threes range from 177 to 226 yards from the back tees, each presenting a different challenge. The 11th, one of two par fives, features an 80-foot drop from an elevated fairway to a tiny green tucked beyond the creek. The club celebrated its centennial in 2010 with a book, a vintage-racquet tennis tournament, and a hickory-shaft golf event. Located at 2319 South Cedar Crest Boulevard, Lehigh remains a private club with approximately 400 members.
