Lillian S. Wells Hall at The Parker

A $30 million renovation transformed the beloved Parker Playhouse into The Parker, and at its heart sits Lillian S. Wells Hall, a 1,147-seat jewel of a theatre that combines neo-classical design with outstanding acoustics, unobstructed sightlines, and the wide-row continental seating that audiences have cherished since the venue first opened in the 1960s. Located at 707 Northeast 8th Street in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, The Parker reopened in September 2021 after an 18-month construction period. The campaign for the renovation was led by the Broward Performing Arts Foundation, which raised $30 million to modernize systems, install state-of-the-art sound and lighting, expand hospitality spaces, and add premium lounges and a signature lobby bar. The original facade of the building was incorporated into a soaring new glass-and-steel entrance, the S. Donald Sussman Lobby. The hall itself was named after the final major gift came from the Lillian S. Wells Foundation, whose $5 million donation completed the capital campaign. The Wells Foundation had supported the Broward Center for three decades prior, including naming the Lillian S. Wells Backstage Plaza in 2014. Inside the auditorium, continental-style seating -- two aisles, no balcony -- gives every seat a clear view of the stage. The renovated hall features upgraded infrastructure for touring productions, including enhanced rigging, electrical, and HVAC systems. Backstage facilities include a green room and kitchen on the west side with access to both the wings and the West Lobby. A dedicated stage door at the northeast corner handles artist and crew logistics. The Parker is managed by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and presents a year-round calendar of concerts, comedy, Broadway-style shows, and family programming. More than half a century after the original Parker Playhouse earned its reputation as one of South Florida's landmark entertainment venues, the reimagined Parker carries that tradition forward with modern amenities and the intimate atmosphere that first made it a favorite in the Fort Lauderdale arts community.
