Live Oak Bank Pavilion

Backed up against the Cape Fear River in historic downtown Wilmington, North Carolina, this 7,200-capacity amphitheater opened on July 16, 2021 with three sold-out nights of Widespread Panic. Owned by the City of Wilmington and operated by Live Nation, the venue splits its capacity between 2,400 reserved seats and 4,800 lawn spaces, creating a festival-format layout on a 6.6-acre riverside site designed in part by New York-based Sage and Coombe Architects. The $35 million park project had a winding path to construction. A 2012 bond referendum to build a minor league ballpark on the site was voted down by residents. The city acquired the land in 2013 for $4.1 million, and a second referendum in 2016 approved using the property for a live-music entertainment venue in a park setting. Live Nation contributed $4 million after Hurricane Florence in 2018 escalated construction material costs. The 4,000-square-foot stage faces the audience with the river behind it, and back-of-house structures including production offices make up the primary infrastructure. The inaugural season exceeded expectations, with nearly 90,000 tickets sold across 20 performances in a compressed schedule running from July to October. The city receives $2 from each ticket and a $200,000 annual payment from Live Nation. More than two dozen acts are booked per season, making the pavilion the largest music venue in the Wilmington area, complementing the 1,200-capacity Greenfield Lake Amphitheater roughly three miles south. The broader Riverfront Park includes a large plaza, a children's playground, and a splash pad alongside the amphitheater. The venue originally carried the names North Waterfront Park and Riverfront Park Amphitheater before a naming-rights agreement with Wilmington-based Live Oak Bank was finalized in July 2021. Operating hours run from 3 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on Saturdays, with an 11 p.m. curfew extendable to midnight only in cases of delays or artist hold-ups.
