Mackay Stadium

Home to the Nevada Wolf Pack football program since October 1, 1966, Mackay Stadium sits at the northern end of the University of Nevada, Reno campus at 1664 North Virginia Street, at an elevation of 4,610 feet above sea level. The 27,000-seat venue is named for the Mackay family -- particularly John William Mackay and his son Clarence H. Mackay, who funded the original 1909 stadium on a different campus site that was eventually demolished to make room for academic buildings. The current stadium broke ground on June 11, 1964 and opened with a seating capacity of 7,500. The Wolf Pack's very first game here, a 17-13 win over UC Santa Barbara led by quarterback Chris Ault, set the tone for what would become one of the strongest home-field advantages in the Mountain West Conference. Under Ault -- who later returned as athletics director and oversaw the stadium's major expansions -- Mackay grew through a series of enlargements: to 14,000 in 1978, 21,000 by 1985, and nearly 32,000 after a second-deck and skybox expansion in 1991-92. An $11.5 million renovation ahead of the 2016 season prioritized fan amenities over raw capacity, reducing seating to 26,000 before settling at the current 27,000 by 2017. The 48 permanent suites on the west-side skybox complex and 12 east-side suites offer premium viewing, while the Stadium Club provides an event-ready hospitality space. The natural grass surface was replaced by FieldTurf synthetic turf in 2000, a decision that paid for itself in water and labor savings within four years. The playing surface is named Chris Ault Field, honoring the coach and administrator whose career defined Wolf Pack football. The record attendance of 33,391 was set during a 1995 game against UNLV. Sporting News named Mackay the top venue in the Mountain West in 2015, noting that when the Wolf Pack is winning, "this is a loud and tough place to play." The stadium also hosts Nevada women's soccer, commencements, and community events. The Wolf Pack's all-time record in the stadium entering recent seasons stands at a commanding 232-93-2.
