Named for the late son of Nike co-founder Phil Knight, Matthew Knight Arena opened on January 13, 2011 with a sold-out crowd of 12,364 as the Oregon Ducks men's basketball team christened the $227 million facility with a 68-62 victory over USC. The 420,000-square-foot arena at 1390 Villard Street on the east side of the University of Oregon campus replaced legendary McArthur Court, which had served as the Ducks' home since 1927. Designed as a collaboration between TVA Architects of Portland and Ellerbe Becket of Kansas City, with Hoffman Construction as general contractor, the arena was built to be the first LEED Gold-certified arena in the NCAA. The playing surface sits below grade, and construction required the excavation of 330,000 cubic yards of dirt and the placement of over 2,900 tons of structural steel. Ground was broken on February 7, 2009, and the building was completed in under two years. The arena is the home of Oregon Ducks men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, and the acrobatics and tumbling team, all competing in the Big Ten Conference since the 2024-25 season after decades in the Pac-12. Concert configurations vary from 5,400 in a theatre setup to 8,867 for end-stage shows and 12,364 for in-the-round events. The venue coalition lists it among the premier college arenas on the West Coast for touring entertainment. Situated at the gateway to campus where Franklin Boulevard meets Villard Street, the arena is visible from Interstate 5 and served by the EmX Agate Station bus rapid transit stop. An attached parking structure, the arena's modern concourses, and premium seating options including suites and club seats round out the fan experience.
