Memorial Stadium Nebraska

Dedicated to honour Nebraskans who served in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I, Memorial Stadium at 600 Stadium Drive in Lincoln opened on October 13, 1923 with a 23-0 Cornhusker victory over Oklahoma -- played on dirt with Nebraska wearing blue to accommodate the Sooners, who had travelled with only crimson uniforms. The original 31,080-seat structure was built in under six months after Chancellor Samuel Avery broke ground via horse-drawn plow. Successive expansions transformed the stadium from open-ended grandstands into its now-familiar enclosed bowl. South end zone bleachers arrived in 1964, pushing capacity past 44,000; the north end zone followed in 1965-66, doubling the total past 62,000. A 1972 south expansion reached 73,650. The most recent major project, the 2013 East Stadium expansion, peaked capacity at 87,147 before seat-widening adjustments brought it to the current 85,458. The consecutive sellout streak -- widely cited as the longest in college football -- began on November 3, 1962 and surpassed 410 games entering the 2026 season. Nebraska has gone undefeated at home in 33 seasons, with a longest winning streak of 47 games from 1991 to 1998. In April 2026 the Board of Regents approved the 600-million-dollar "Big Red Rebuild," a renovation expected to reduce capacity to approximately 80,000 by the 2028 season while modernising amenities and transforming Memorial Stadium into a year-round concert and event destination. The Big Red Rebuild is projected to create more than 7,300 jobs and drive an estimated 1.1 billion dollars in statewide economic impact, with annual stadium revenue expected to reach 95 million dollars -- a 40-percent increase over current levels. The project will be funded without taxpayer dollars through a mix of at least 250 million dollars in philanthropic support and 350 million dollars in private bond financing. The playing surface was converted to FieldTurf in 2005 after decades alternating between natural grass and AstroTurf.
