Opened in October 2015, the Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston -- universally known as MATCH -- is a $25 million, 60,000-square-foot multi-tenant performing arts facility at 3400 Main Street in Houston's Midtown neighborhood, adjacent to the HCC/Ensemble MetroRail stop. Designed by Lake|Flato and Studio RED, the complex was custom-built to serve the small and mid-sized arts organizations that make up the majority of Houston's cultural community -- more than 40 groups participated in the planning process. The facility houses four performance spaces: Matchbox 1, a flexible black box seating 116 in the round or 86 end-stage; Matchbox 2, a dedicated dance space with a permanent sprung floor and 153 fixed seats; Matchbox 3, another adaptable black box for 144 in the round or 123 end-stage; and Matchbox 4, a 323-seat proscenium theatre with a permanent HD projector and screen. Two buildings flank an open-air breezeway that serves as an outdoor performance and gathering space, connecting Main Street to a rear drop-off on Travis Street. Beyond the performance halls, MATCH includes a 3,000-square-foot gallery, rehearsal studios, offices, a box office, and a small cafe. The gallery and studios occupy a second building, providing resident organizations with both creation and presentation space under one roof. All four matchboxes feature complete sound and lighting systems, enabling simultaneous events with acoustic independence. MATCH was launched by an informal group of Houston arts leaders who spent several years identifying the need for affordable, professional-quality performance venues for emerging and mid-level companies. Philanthropist Michael Zilkha provided a $1 million catalyst gift, and 52 donors ultimately funded the project. The center sits between downtown and the Museum District/Texas Medical Center, anchoring Midtown's growing identity as a cultural destination.
