Neyland Stadium

Constructed in 1921 as Shields-Watkins Field with a 3,200-seat grandstand on the west side, Neyland Stadium at 1235 Phillip Fulmer Way in Knoxville has grown through 16 expansion projects into one of the most iconic venues in college football. The first game on the field was a 27-0 Tennessee victory over Emory and Henry on September 24, 1921. Capacity grew almost tenfold between 1926 and 1938, reaching 31,390 through expansions on both the east and west sides. Post-World War II additions pushed the count past 46,000 by 1948. Upper decks on the east (1968), south (1972 and 1976), and a north lower deck (1980) enclosed the stadium into a full bowl. The 1996 north upper deck took capacity past 100,000 for the first time, and the 2000 east executive suites peaked at 104,079. The record attendance of 109,061 was set on September 18, 2004 against Florida. The stadium was renamed in 1962 for Brigadier General Robert R. Neyland, who coached the Volunteers to multiple national championships across three stints between 1926 and 1952. Renovations completed before the 2022 season brought the official capacity to the current 101,915, making it the sixth-largest stadium in the United States. Six Tennessee teams that captured national titles have called Neyland Stadium home, and 22 players and four head coaches authored careers worthy of the College Football Hall of Fame on its hallowed ground. The playing surface has alternated between grass (1921-1967, 1994-present) and artificial turf (1968-1993). A transformative partnership with Pilot, announced in August 2024, preserves the Neyland Stadium and Shields-Watkins Field names through a long-term commitment. Comprehensive stadium master-plan upgrades fuelled by the My All Campaign continue to prepare the venue for its next century of service, with widened concourses, expanded plazas, and enhanced fan amenities completed ahead of the 2022 and 2025 seasons.
