Home of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins since its opening on August 18, 2010, PPG Paints Arena is an 18,187-seat multi-purpose arena at 1001 Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh's Uptown neighbourhood. Originally named Consol Energy Center, it was renamed in 2016 under a sponsorship agreement with PPG Industries. The $321 million facility was designed by Populous and replaced the iconic Civic Arena, with the hockey capacity set at 18,087 in honour of Sidney Crosby's number 87 and the arena featuring 66 suites in honour of Mario Lemieux's number 66. The 720,000-square-foot venue seats up to 19,000 for basketball, 14,536-19,758 for concerts depending on stage configuration, and includes 1,950 club seats. An advanced curtaining system adjusts the seating layout for different event formats. The arena is owned by the Sports and Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County and operated by AEG in partnership with the Penguins and Live Nation. PPG Paints Arena has hosted NHL Playoff games, the 2012 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship first and second rounds, and concerts by Paul McCartney, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and many others. The venue draws over 1.5 million visitors annually across more than 150 events. It is accessible via the Pittsburgh Light Rail Steel Plaza station and features technology developed with Carnegie Mellon University students, including the YinzCam instant replay system for mobile devices.
