Thalian Hall is a historic city hall and theatre at 310 Chestnut Street in Wilmington, North Carolina, built between 1855 and 1858. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1970, it is the only surviving theatre designed by John Montague Trimble, one of America's foremost nineteenth-century theatre architects. The two-storey stuccoed brick building combines restrained Classical Revival and Late Victorian design elements, with a prominent tetrastyle Corinthian order portico on its front facade. When it opened, Wilmington was the largest city in North Carolina, and the opera house seated 1,000 people -- ten per cent of the town's population. During the Civil War, Thalian Hall was in almost constant use for entertainment. The theatre was once leased (1867-1871) by John T. Ford of Ford's Theatre fame in Washington, D.C. The Historic Main Stage now seats 550 to 650 guests across the Weyerhaeuser Parquet and Dress Circle, with the original 1858 Gallery level available for select events. Additional venues include the Stein Theatre (up to 100 seats) and the Ruth and Bucky Stein Ballroom (175 seats). Managed since 1963 by the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts, Inc., the venue annually hosts approximately 500 events attended by nearly 90,000 people. Programming includes touring performances through the Main Street Attractions series, the Cinematique Film Series, and arts education programmes such as the Pied Piper Theatre for local schoolchildren.
