The Royal Grove

The Royal Grove is a live music venue at 340 West Cornhusker Highway in Lincoln, Nebraska, with a history stretching back to 1933 when Tommy Jelsma and his wife Norma opened a fried-chicken restaurant that occasionally featured live bands in the village of West Lincoln. By the mid-1960s the Royal Grove had become Nebraska's premier nightlife destination, complete with go-go dancers, a swimming pool, and concerts from nationally known acts. The current Cornhusker Highway location was built and opened in 1967. Tommy ran the venue for fifty-eight years before retiring in 2005, earning induction into the Nebraska Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. The club went dark in 2013, but new owners Eli and Carrie Mardock revived it in 2018, and a two-million-dollar renovation in 2023 modernised the 16,000-square-foot facility into a sleek nightclub with multiple spaces: a 600-capacity concert hall, a lounge, a balcony, and an outdoor patio. Programming spans live bands, DJ nights, electronic dance music, and private events. The Royal Grove remains fiercely independent, locally owned, and family operated.
