Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center

Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center is a 21,678-seat multi-purpose arena at 1600 Phillip Fulmer Way on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. When it opened on December 3, 1987, the forty-million-dollar facility was the largest arena ever built specifically for basketball in the United States, with an original capacity of 24,535. The arena is 448 feet long, 310 feet wide, and contains more than 411,000 square feet of floor space. It is named after the late B. Ray Thompson Sr. and former UT president Dr. Edward J. Boling. The men's attendance record was 25,610 for a 1989 game against Kentucky, and the Lady Vols' record of 24,653 against UConn in 2006 remains the all-time mark for a regular-season NCAA women's basketball game. Capacity was reduced to 21,678 during a thirty-five-million-dollar renovation in 2007 that added 32 luxury suites, loge seating, a three-million-dollar central scoreboard, and replaced the original orange seats with black. The arena also serves as a concert venue with capacity up to 25,000 and is home to Tennessee Volunteers basketball and Lady Vols volleyball.
