Château des ducs de Bretagne
click to manageStanding within a complete circuit of fifteenth-century walls and a water-filled moat in the centre of Nantes, this ducal residence served as the seat of the Dukes of Brittany from the thirteenth century until the province's union with France in 1532. The present fortress was largely rebuilt between 1466 and 1480 by Duke Francis II, who transformed it from a medieval stronghold into a fortified Renaissance palace combining military defences with residential luxury. The exterior presents seven massive towers linked by curtain walls of white tufa limestone and granite, rising directly from the moat. Within the walls, a sequence of courtyard buildings in flamboyant Gothic style housed the ducal apartments, chapel, and administrative offices. The Grand Logis, with its five elaborate dormer windows and intricately carved granite facade, remains the architectural centrepiece. It was here in 1598 that Henry IV signed the Edict of Nantes, granting religious tolerance to French Protestants. After the union with France the castle became a royal fortress, then a military barracks and prison. The Spanish Civil War general and Carlist pretender was held here. During the Second World War it served as a German munitions depot; an explosion in 1800 had earlier destroyed the chapel tower. The city of Nantes acquired the castle in 1915 and began restoration that continued through the twentieth century. Today the castle houses the Musee d'Histoire de Nantes, a permanent exhibition spanning 32 rooms that traces the city's history from its Gallo-Roman origins through the transatlantic slave trade, industrialisation, and twentieth-century conflicts. The rampart walk is free to access and offers views over the old town. The moat gardens host summer events and installations. Nantes tramway line 1 stops directly outside the castle moat at the Duchesse Anne station.
