Cirque du Soleil Las Vegas
click to manageThe Montreal-based entertainment company operates multiple resident shows simultaneously on the Las Vegas Strip, each installed in a purpose-built or extensively modified theatre within a host casino-resort. The model of permanent Las Vegas residencies began in 1993 with Mystere at Treasure Island, making Cirque du Soleil one of the longest-running entertainment presences on the Strip. Each show occupies a bespoke performance space engineered for its specific requirements. The O Theatre at the Bellagio contains a 5.7-million-litre pool that can be raised, lowered, or converted to a solid stage within seconds. The Ka Theatre at MGM Grand houses a rotating platform that tilts to near-vertical for martial arts sequences. The Michael Jackson ONE Theatre at Mandalay Bay was retrofitted with a 360-degree surround-sound system of over 4,000 individually addressable speakers. At any given time, between four and six Cirque productions run simultaneously in Las Vegas, collectively employing over 1,500 performers, technicians, and support staff from more than 50 countries. Annual combined attendance across all Las Vegas shows exceeds three million. The company's Las Vegas operation alone generates revenue comparable to a mid-sized Broadway season. Theatres range in capacity from approximately 1,600 to 2,000 seats, each designed for optimal sightlines in the round or semi-thrust configurations that Cirque favours over traditional proscenium staging. Shows run five to six nights per week, with matinees on selected days, maintaining a near-continuous performance schedule throughout the year. The company was founded in 1984 by former street performers Guy Laliberte and Gilles Ste-Croix in Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec, and entered the Las Vegas market in 1993 with a deal that fundamentally changed the economics of Strip entertainment by demonstrating that a theatrical production could draw audiences without gambling as the primary incentive. Each production requires a creation period of three to four years and a capital investment typically exceeding 100 million dollars, recouped over multi-year runs.
