Stretching seven miles along the Atlantic coast of Broward County, Fort Lauderdale Beach is the primary public beach serving the Greater Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area and one of the most visited stretches of sand in southeastern Florida. The beach runs from the port inlet at its northern end south to the boundary with Dania Beach, fronted for much of its length by the palm-lined promenade of State Road A1A, locally known as Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard. The beach gained a reputation as a college spring break destination following the 1960 film Where the Boys Are, and by the 1980s the annual influx had reached 350,000 students. City authorities subsequently rebranded the beach as a family and upscale tourism destination through infrastructure investment, restrictive ordinances, and the development of luxury hotels and condominiums along the beachfront boulevard. The transformation was largely complete by the early 2000s. The wave-wall promenade, a low serpentine concrete wall separating the beach from the roadside pavement, provides continuous seating and serves as an informal social boundary between the beach and the commercial strip. Bars, restaurants, surf shops, and souvenir stores line the western side of A1A, their outdoor terraces oriented toward the ocean. The Sebastian Street beach section is the designated LGBTQ-friendly stretch. Public beach access points with shower facilities, restrooms, and lifeguard towers are spaced at regular intervals. Paid metered parking lines the boulevard, and a water taxi service connects beachfront hotels to the Intracoastal Waterway dining district. The beach is supervised by Broward County Ocean Rescue lifeguards daily from sunrise to sunset year-round. The beach's position on the Atlantic coast means it benefits from the Gulf Stream's warming influence, keeping water temperatures above 24 degrees Celsius from May through October. Artificial reef programmes offshore support recreational fishing and dive tourism, adding an underwater dimension to the beach's attractions.
