Everson Museum of Art

Designed by I. M. Pei and opened in 1968, this brutalist concrete museum in downtown Syracuse was among the first buildings to establish Pei's international reputation and remains one of the most architecturally significant art museums in upstate New York. The cantilevered gallery blocks, connected by a spiral internal staircase, create a sculptural exterior presence on Harrison Street while providing flexible exhibition spaces within, lit by carefully positioned clerestory windows. The collection numbers approximately 11,000 works with particular strength in American art, ceramics, and video art. The ceramics collection is nationally recognized, holding over 3,000 pieces that trace the history of American studio pottery from the Arts and Crafts movement through mid-century modernism to contemporary practice. The museum hosts the annual Ceramic Nationals competition, the longest-running juried ceramics exhibition in the United States, established in 1932. Painting and sculpture holdings include works by Jackson Pollock, John Singer Sargent, Andrew Wyeth, and a significant group of works by Syracuse-area artists. The museum was an early champion of video art, establishing a video collection in the 1970s that now includes works by Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, and regional practitioners. The building's design, with its fortress-like concrete masses hovering above a recessed ground floor, was controversial at its unveiling but has been reassessed as a masterwork of late modernist museum architecture. Free general admission was introduced in 2012 to increase accessibility. The museum sits in the Armory Square district, a short walk from Syracuse's downtown transit hub. The museum's education programmes serve over 25,000 schoolchildren annually from the greater Syracuse region. Recent exhibitions have expanded into digital art and new media, reflecting the museum's early-adopter ethos that also drove its 1970s video art acquisitions. The building was designated a Syracuse Landmark in 1980.
