La Lanterna di Genova, the historic lighthouse of Genoa, stands 77 metres tall on the promontory of Capo di Faro at the western edge of the old port, making it one of the tallest traditional lighthouses in the world and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the Mediterranean. A lighthouse has occupied this site since at least 1128, with the current tower dating from a 1543 reconstruction following damage during fighting between Genoese factions and French forces. The two-section stone tower -- a square lower stage surmounted by a slightly narrower upper stage, both topped by terraces with iron railings -- became Genoa's defining civic symbol, appearing on the city's coat of arms and serving as the visual identifier of the port for arriving ships across centuries of maritime trade. The lantern has been electrified since 1936 and its beam remains visible at a range of approximately 50 kilometres. A museum inside the tower documents the lighthouse's history and the broader story of Genoese maritime navigation, trade, and port operations. Exhibits trace the evolution of lighthouse technology from open fires and oil lamps through Fresnel lenses to modern electric optics, set against the larger narrative of Genoa's role as one of medieval and Renaissance Europe's dominant maritime republics. A waterfront promenade connects La Lanterna to the Porto Antico district, providing a pedestrian route along the harbour edge past working port infrastructure, cruise terminals, and container operations that illustrate the continuity of Genoa's maritime function. Visitors climb internal stairs to the first terrace for panoramic views across the port, the city's amphitheatre of hills, and the Ligurian Sea. The lighthouse is approximately a 20-minute walk west from the Acquario di Genova.
