Genoa Porto Antico

The redeveloped old port of Genoa, transformed in 1992 by architect Renzo Piano for the Columbian Expo celebrating the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's first voyage. Piano, a Genoa native, converted the derelict medieval harbour into a mixed-use waterfront district that now serves as the city's principal leisure and cultural hub, anchored by the Acquario di Genova -- one of Europe's largest aquariums -- and surrounded by museums, restaurants, cinemas, an ice rink, and a public swimming pool floating in the harbour basin. The Bigo, a crane-like structure designed by Piano, lifts a panoramic elevator cabin 40 metres above the quay, providing aerial views over the port and city. Nearby, the Biosfera is a tropical greenhouse sphere perched on the waterfront containing over 150 plant and animal species. The cotton warehouses (Magazzini del Cotone) along the molo have been converted into a conference centre, shops, and entertainment spaces while retaining their industrial character. Beyond Piano's expo interventions, the Porto Antico incorporates the Galata Museo del Mare, Italy's largest maritime museum, the Palazzo San Giorgio -- a medieval building that served as the seat of the Banco di San Giorgio, one of the world's earliest public banks -- and working boat moorings where traditional sailing vessels are maintained. The Lanterna lighthouse is visible from the western end of the harbour promenade. The area functions as Genoa's primary gathering space for outdoor events, seasonal markets, and summer concerts, with the waterfront piazzas accommodating large crowds. It connects directly to the historic centre through the Porto Antico gates at Via al Porto Antico, a 5-minute walk from Genova Piazza Principe railway station. The port area is free to access; individual attractions charge separate admission.
