One of the world's great science museums, founded in 1857 from the collections of the Great Exhibition and housed in a purpose-built complex on Exhibition Road in South Kensington alongside the Natural History Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum. The collection encompasses over 300,000 objects spanning the history of science, technology, medicine, and industry from ancient astronomical instruments to the latest developments in artificial intelligence and space exploration. Landmark objects include Stephenson's Rocket, the world's first successful steam locomotive; the original Difference Engine No. 1 designed by Charles Babbage; Watson and Crick's original DNA model; the Apollo 10 command module; Arkwright's spinning frame; and an extensive collection of early computing machinery from the Pilot ACE to Colossus. These objects anchor narratives of technological change and its social consequences that the galleries explore through interactive and contextual interpretation. Major galleries include the Winton Gallery (mathematics, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects), the Information Age gallery (communication technology), the Flight gallery (aviation from the Wright Flyer replica to Concorde), Medicine: The Wellcome Galleries (the world's largest medical history exhibition), and the interactive Wonderlab aimed at younger visitors. An IMAX cinema and a 4D theatre supplement the galleries. The museum is free to enter and attracts over 3.3 million visitors annually, making it the most visited science museum in Europe. Special exhibitions, typically three to four annually, cover topics from robotics to disease epidemics and require separate ticketed admission. South Kensington tube station on the Piccadilly, District, and Circle lines provides direct access via a pedestrian tunnel.
