A communication and observation tower on Namsan Mountain in central Seoul, rising to a total height of 479.7 metres above sea level (236.7 metres of which is the tower structure itself atop the 243-metre mountain). Built in 1969 as Seoul's first integrated broadcast tower and opened to the public in 1980, N Seoul Tower has become the city's most recognisable landmark and a mandatory inclusion on tourist itineraries, offering panoramic views across the vast Seoul metropolitan area of over 25 million people. The observation deck provides 360-degree views of Seoul's urban expanse from the Han River to the surrounding mountain ring -- Bukhansan to the north, Gwanaksan to the south, Dobongsan to the northeast. On clear days, visibility extends to the mountains near the DMZ. The digital observation level uses touchscreens to identify the buildings and landmarks visible from each compass point, adding informational depth to the panoramic viewing experience. The tower's exterior lighting changes colour and pattern nightly, serving as a massive urban light installation visible from across the city. The Locks of Love fence surrounding the observation deck is covered in thousands of padlocks attached by couples as a romantic tradition, and the practice has become an attraction in itself. Restaurants in the tower include a revolving dining room providing views that shift continuously during the meal. Access to Namsan's summit is by the Namsan Cable Car from Namsangol Village, by the Namsan Circular Bus from nearby subway stations, or on foot via walking trails that ascend the mountain from multiple directions. Myeong-dong Station on Line 4 and Chungmuro Station on Lines 3 and 4 are the nearest rail connections. The tower and mountain park are open year-round with extended hours on weekends and holidays.
