A museum of eighteenth-century Venetian life and art housed in a monumental baroque palazzo on the Grand Canal, designed by Baldassare Longhena in 1649 and completed by Giorgio Massari in 1756. The building itself, with its rusticated ground floor, giant-order columns, and theatrical waterfront facade, represents one of the finest examples of Venetian baroque palace architecture and provides an authentic aristocratic setting for the decorative arts and paintings displayed within its frescoed salons. The collection presents Venice's final century of independence before Napoleon's conquest in 1797, when the city's artistic life remained extraordinarily vital despite political decline. Major works include ceiling frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo and his son Giandomenico, paintings by Canaletto, Francesco Guardi, and Pietro Longhi, period furniture, Murano glass chandeliers, lacquerwork, and a recreated eighteenth-century pharmacy with original painted cabinets and ceramic jars. The piano nobile ballroom, with its vast Tiepolo ceiling fresco depicting Ludovico Rezzonico's marriage allegory, carved and gilded furniture, and massive Murano glass chandeliers, recreates the atmosphere of a patrician palace at the height of Venice's last golden age. The building's former residents include poet Robert Browning, who died here in 1889, and painter John Singer Sargent, who used the palazzo as a studio. The museum forms part of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia network. Access is from the Ca' Rezzonico vaporetto stop on Line 1 on the Grand Canal. The palazzo's courtyard and ground-floor androne provide a cool retreat during Venice's humid summer months. Upper-floor windows offer intimate views of Grand Canal traffic and the palaces opposite that are impossible to obtain from water level.
