Lace Museum

The Museo del Merletto on the island of Burano in the northern Venetian lagoon documents the history and technique of Burano point lace, a needle-lace tradition that made this small fishing island one of the world's most important centres of luxury textile production from the sixteenth century onward. The museum occupies a building that formerly housed the lace-making school established in 1872 to revive a tradition that had nearly died out during the nineteenth century. The collection includes over 200 examples of historical lacework spanning five centuries, from the earliest geometric punto in aria (stitches in air) of the Renaissance through the extravagant baroque compositions that dressed European royalty, to the revival pieces produced by the school from 1872 until its closure in 1970. The evolution of pattern, technique, and function is traced through pieces that range from tiny insertion panels to full altar frontals measuring several metres. Demonstrations by the remaining practitioners of Burano point lace -- now elderly women who learned in the school's final decades -- reveal the extraordinary patience and skill required: a single large piece can require several years of continuous work by one person, with the needle creating thousands of tiny stitches over a parchment pattern without any supporting fabric. The technique produces a textile of ethereal delicacy that historically commanded prices comparable to fine jewellery. The island of Burano itself, famous for its brightly painted fishermen's houses reflecting in the canal waters, provides a picturesque setting reached by a 40-minute vaporetto journey from Fondamente Nove on Line 12. Visitors typically combine the lace museum with a visit to the adjacent glass-blowing island of Murano and the ancient cathedral on Torcello. The museum is included in the Musei Civici combined pass.
