Defenders praised the elegance of the structural form and the city's need to demonstrate architectural vitality. Functionally, the bridge provides a direct pedestrian connection between the two principal arrival points for visitors entering Venice -- the railway station and the bus/car terminal at Piazzale Roma -- eliminating a circuitous detour through back streets.
