The oldest and most famous of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal, the Ponte di Rialto was constructed in its current stone form between 1588 and 1591 by Antonio da Ponte, replacing a succession of wooden bridges that had served the crossing since the twelfth century. The single marble arch spans 28.8 metres with a rise of 7.5 metres, supporting a covered passage divided into three walkways by two rows of shops -- a commercial function the bridge has maintained continuously for over four centuries. The bridge's engineering was daring for its era: a single arch of such span in stone was considered structurally risky, and the competition to design the replacement attracted proposals from Michelangelo, Palladio, and Sansovino, all of whom were rejected in favour of da Ponte's design. The structure rests on 6,000 timber piles driven into the canal bed on each side, with foundations extending 20 metres back from the waterline to distribute the arch's lateral thrust across the soft lagoon sediment. The twenty-four shops along the bridge's central arcade have sold gold jewellery, leather goods, and souvenirs since the bridge's opening, continuing a commercial tradition that dates to the wooden bridge era when the Rialto was Venice's financial and mercantile centre. The open stone terraces at each end and at the apex provide viewpoints along the Grand Canal in both directions, framing the concentration of Gothic and Renaissance palaces that cluster around this historic crossing point. The Rialto area surrounding the bridge encompasses Venice's oldest commercial district: the Rialto fish and produce markets (operating since 1097), the medieval banking quarter, and the churches of San Giacomo di Rialto (claimed as Venice's oldest) and San Giovanni Elemosinario. The Rialto vaporetto stop on Line 1 is at the bridge's eastern foot, while Rialto Mercato serves the western bank.
