Built for the United States Bicentennial and opened on 14 June 1976, the outdoor amphitheatre in West Fairmount Park was created as a new summer home for the Philadelphia Orchestra, succeeding the ageing Robin Hood Dell where the orchestra had performed since the 1930s.
