John Barrymore put money into this theatre before it had a name that would stick. The Fonda at 6126 Hollywood Boulevard opened on October 20, 1926 as Carter DeHaven's Music Box, a Spanish Colonial Revival house by Morgan, Walls and Clements whose first investors included Barrymore, John Gilbert, King Vidor and Mae Murray, and whose rooftop cabaret doubled as a Prohibition speakeasy.
