All about the Passion
CPKC Stadium

The first stadium ever built for a women's professional team stands on the Kansas City riverfront, and it has not had an empty seat since. CPKC Stadium at 1460 East Front Street on the Berkley Riverfront opened on 16 March 2024 with the Kansas City Current beating the Portland Thorns 5-4 before a sellout - Vanessa DiBernardo scoring the building's first goal. Current co-owners Angie Long, Chris Long and Brittany Mahomes had announced the privately funded project in October 2021, barely ten month.....

Folly Theater

Jack Johnson slept in the manager's apartment because no Kansas City hotel would rent the heavyweight champion a room; Gypsy Rose Lee made her unplanned first burlesque appearance on the same stage in 1929. The Folly Theater at 300 West 12th Street opened on 23 September 1900 as the Standard Theatre - a Louis Curtiss design whose exposed lightbulbs showed off a technology barely a generation old - and it is now Kansas City's oldest theatre. Its century ran through every name and vice the entert.....

Kansas City Live!

An entire downtown city block, roofed in translucent plastic pillows and wired for sound, functions as Kansas City's open-air living room. KC Live! - the heart of the Power and Light District at 13th and Grand Boulevard, directly across from the T-Mobile Center arena - opened in 2008 and hosts concerts, festivals and watch parties beneath its ETFE canopy for crowds in the thousands. The block was the centrepiece of downtown Kansas City's great revival bet: developer Cordish built the multi-bloc.....

Knuckleheads

A body-shop owner threw street parties with free beer to lure customers to the wrong side of the tracks - and accidentally built one of America's great roots-music venues. Knuckleheads, at 2715 Rochester Street in Kansas City's industrial East Bottoms, is a four-stage honky-tonk complex where Merle Haggard, Lucinda Williams, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson have all played beside an active rail line. Frank and Mary Hicks ran Mid-City Collision Repair here and opened the F.O.G. Cycles Harley-Da.....

Screenland Armour Theatre

The first film shown here starred Jean Arthur and a baseball; a blind pianist improvised the score. The Screenland Armour at 408 Armour Road opened on 6 September 1928 as the Armour Theatre, North Kansas City's first community theatre building, designed by Kansas City architects Keene and Simpson in Spanish Revival style with 650 seats and a vaudeville stage. The silent era gave the house its best origin story: local pianist George Newell, blind from birth, accompanied the pictures while his wi.....

The Midland Theatre - MO

On opening day the line stretched several blocks, and by noon all four thousand seats were gone. The Midland Theatre at 1228 Main Street in Kansas City opened on October 28, 1927 as Loew's Midland - a 4.5-million-dollar Thomas W. Lamb movie palace commissioned by local businessman Herbert Woolf with Marcus Loew's backing, the third-largest theatre in the United States behind only New York's Roxy and Capitol. The excess was the point: a 28-foot chandelier with 300 amber bulbs, interiors salvaged.....

VooDoo at Harrah's Kansas City

A two-storey concert venue inside Harrah's casino in North Kansas City, the VooDoo Lounge is one of the area's busier rooms for touring music. Located on the casino complex beside the Missouri River, the 21-and-over venue holds around 1,150 people standing or roughly 750 when seated, and stages most of its shows from Thursday through Saturday, though its calendar is flexible. The lounge is built around live performance, with a stage, sound and lighting suited to national touring acts across roc.....
