Brooklyn Bridge

When it opened in May 1883 after fourteen years of work, the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world and the first to be built with steel-wire cables, a span so ambitious that it earned the nickname the eighth wonder of the world. It crosses the East River to join Manhattan and Brooklyn, and its pair of Gothic-arched granite towers remains one of the most recognisable images of New York. The bridge nearly broke the family that built it. The designer, John A. Roebling, die.....

Brooklyn Heights Promenade

Cantilevered out over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade is a 1,826-foot pedestrian walkway whose chief attraction is the view: an unbroken panorama of Lower Manhattan, the harbour, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge spread out across the East River. It is owned by the city's transport department as part of the highway structure rather than designated as a park, though the parks department maintains it. Its existence is the product of a planning fight in t.....

Charging Bull

A 7,100-pound bronze bull, head lowered and muscles tensed as if about to charge, stands on a traffic island on Broadway just north of Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan, where it has become one of the city's most photographed sculptures. Eleven feet tall and sixteen feet long, the work known as Charging Bull is meant to embody aggressive financial optimism, and crowds line up daily to pose with it near the heart of the financial district. Its origin is unusual: the bull was never commissioned. T.....
