Vienna has a humid continental climate, with hot summers, cold winters, and a significant temperature range between seasons. Its position in the Pannonian plain, sheltered from Atlantic influence by the Alps, produces more extreme conditions than western European cities at similar latitudes. Spring (March–May): 5–20°C (41–68°F). Variable and often showery early; warming pleasantly from April. The Prater chestnut trees blossom magnificently in May. Summer (June–August): 17–30°C (63–86°F). Hot and humid, occasionally very hot above 35°C. Thunderstorms bring relief. The Danube Island and outdoor pools become the city's social focus. Autumn (September–November): 8–20°C (46–68°F). A glorious season — warm September and October, dramatic foliage in the Vienna Woods, Heuriger wine gardens at their best. Winter (December–February): -3–4°C (27–39°F). Cold and snowy. One of Europe's great Christmas market cities; the Vienna Opera Ball and Fasching carnival season animate the dark months.
