Four floors above the meeting point of Stroget and Kobmagergade, the roof of the ILLUM department store carries one of central Copenhagen's best dining terraces. The long outdoor deck winds around half the building, divided between independent restaurants and cafes, with views across Amagertorv, down onto the shopping streets and over to the towers of Christiansborg. The line-up mixes cuisines deliberately: Skagen Fiskerestaurant serves fish and shellfish pulled from the waters around Skagen, Rossopomodoro does Neapolitan pizza and pasta with imported ingredients, Basara covers sushi, Poke & Sons brings Asian-inspired bowls, bao and gyoza with a Nordic twist, and Original Coffee holds the corner spot with arguably the best casual view in the house - coffee, cake and rye bread sandwiches above the rooftops. Kitchens generally run from 11:00 to 20:00 or 20:30, with the terrace bars open later in season. The rooftop crowns a department store founded by A.C. Illum in 1891, whose food ambitions also run underground - the ILLUM Underground food market fills the basement. For visitors the practical charm is flexibility: a quick espresso break from shopping, lobster and bubbles at sunset, or a full dinner without leaving the pedestrian zone. Access is through the store's escalators and lifts from Ostergade 52. The department store beneath has anchored Amagertorv since Anton Carl Illum opened his business in 1891, and the rooftop is the most public-facing piece of its long push into food and lifestyle retail. Each restaurant runs its own service and its own corner of the deck, so the terrace works as much for a solo coffee as for a long table of eight; in warm months the outdoor seats go fast around sunset, when the light catches the copper spires of Nikolaj tower and Christiansborg across the rooftops. Winter closes parts of the open deck, but the indoor sections of the restaurants trade year-round on the same floor.
