Phoenix built the missing middle of its concert market. The Arizona Financial Theatre at 400 West Washington Street opened on 11 April 2002 as the Dodge Theatre - a roughly 43-million-dollar downtown project backed by investors including Suns and Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo, designed by stadium architect Dan Meis of NBBJ to serve acts too big for the clubs and too intimate for the arenas. The Madhouse on McDowell still holds court at the state fairgrounds. Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum at 1826 West McDowell Road opened on 3 November 1965 with the Ice Follies, a privately funded seven-million-dollar arena billed as the most modern in the Southwest - and its engineering backed the boast: a saddle-shaped, double-curvature cable roof over a perfect circle, designed by Lescher and Mahoney with structural work by T.Y. Lin, that cut air-conditioning volume and gave all of its seats.....

Phoenix solved the problem of 110-degree baseball with nine million pounds of moving steel. Chase Field at 401 East Jefferson Street in downtown Phoenix opened on 31 March 1998 as Bank One Ballpark - "the BOB" to a generation of fans - the 354-million-dollar home of the expansion Arizona Diamondbacks, designed by Ellerbe Becket after ground broke on 16 November 1995. A satellite dish reading CONTACT marks the door of downtown Phoenix's self-described futurist nightclub. Club Contact at 747 West Van Buren Street, near Grand and 7th Avenues, opened on 4 April 2025 to a crowd that broke into spontaneous applause when owner Grace Perry walked past the queue - Perry's Gracie's Tax Bar down the street had spent years becoming one of downtown's most loved community bars, and the new club was pitched as its sister space "for live music, late nights and things we jus.....

A 1917 garage on the old coast-to-coast highway became the venue that taught downtown Phoenix to go out again. Crescent Ballroom at 308 North 2nd Avenue opened on 3 October 2011 with a sold-out Blind Pilot show, the creation of promoter Charlie Levy of Stateside Presents, who had spent years booking other people's rooms across Arizona before renovating the F.L. The venue died once, in a Tempe strip mall - and its founder brought it back to life south of the tracks. Seven names in 33 years - America West, US Airways, Talking Stick Resort, Phoenix Suns Arena, Footprint Center, PHX Arena and now Mortgage Matchup Center - but the address has never changed.
