One of the largest natural history museums in the world, the American Museum of Natural History occupies a sprawling complex of around 25 connected buildings on the western edge of Central Park. It was chartered in 1869 and first opened to the public in 1871 inside an existing building in the park, before moving to its permanent site; the cornerstone of the current home was laid by President Grant in 1874 and the first section opened in 1877. Barney Greengrass
Self-proclaimed as the Sturgeon King since 1908, Barney Greengrass at 541 Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side has been a temple of smoked fish, bagels, and Jewish appetizing for well over a century. Crowning the rocky outcrop of Vista Rock near the middle of Central Park, Belvedere Castle was never meant to be a real fortress. Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould designed it in 1867 as a folly, a decorative lookout built purely to reward the walk up from the Mall with a view; the name is Italian for beautiful view. Finished around 1869, with its surrounding terraces completed a few years later, it began as an open-air shell with no doors or windows, a deliberate eye-catcher that seems to rise .....
